Your Money

From his very first budget vote, Peter made it clear that he would not abide frivolous spending. Nothing has changed since then. His Zero-Based Service Reviews have saved TENS OF MILLIONS, his Zero-Based POLICY Reviews have freed well over ONE HUNDRED MILLION for industry, and his Budget Savings Account has saved MULTIPLE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS for taxpayers. With his push for Extended Producer Responsibility, and all the other little things, it is not hyperbole to say you can thank Peter for into the BILLIONS in savings, but there is more to be done. Here are just some of the ways that Peter is making sure that YOUR money stays in YOUR pocket:

  1. Budget Savings Account

"Glad to hear Peter will be (running for) council again. Guess there will be changes and new faces, so nice to have someone who has done such hard work and understands the process." Joan K from Lake Bonavista, March 2021

There are not many other Councillors, if any, who can claim to have saved taxpayers HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of DOLLARS. Peter can make that claim though. His Budget Savings Account idea has saved over $700 million in cost savings, and cost avoidance. The Budget Savings Account is not going away either. It is embedded in the City’s budgeting process. There to save hundreds of millions in perpetuity.

Essentially, the Budget Savings Account gives City Hall higher-ups an incentive to do better. It breaks the perpetual need to justify budget asks with last minute spending. It gives managers a place to put their savings to be used for good. The most important part is that every dollar saved by the budget savings account, is a dollar that does not need to come from your pocket. Peter’s Budget Savings Account is a major improvement to the process.

  2. Leave 700 Vacant Positions Vacant

In this economy, jobs in the private sector continue to be under the microscope. So too should jobs in the public sector. Peter successfully passed a motion to leave 700 currently vacant City positions unfilled during this time when the City of Calgary needs to dig deeper for savings.

  3. Cut Red Tape Committee

In the spring of 2012, Peter was asked to Chair the Cut Red Tape Committee. The Committee sought to remove barriers to accessing city services, improve customer experiences, and make it easier for citizens and businesses to work with the City of Calgary.

  4. Calgary’s 311 System

Peter is always looking for more efficient ways for the City to do business, especially when it comes to Calgary’s 311 system. Through a Notice of Motion, some clever allocation of existing funds, and promoting collaboration Peter is making the City more accountable to you. He is paving the way to real time updates on the progress of citizen requests, and far better service performance through improved efficiency. All of Peter’s work on the 311 process--from request to completion--has paid off. It has resulted in $681,720 in efficiency savings per year, and that is just for the roads department.
